The Bundesverfassungsgericht, the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany, is the court charged with interpreting the Grundgesetz, Germany's post-war constitution, and reviewing the constitutionality of federal and state legislation. It was established under Articles 92 to 94 of the Grundgesetz and began work in 1951, sitting in Karlsruhe rather than the federal capital, a deliberate separation from the seat of government carried over from the location of the earlier Reichsgericht. Individuals may bring a Verfassungsbeschwerde, a constitutional complaint, directly to the Court once other legal remedies are exhausted, a form of direct citizen access to constitutional review that goes further than most peer courts. Its two Senates have decided landmark cases on human dignity, the Basic Law's eternity clause protecting core constitutional principles from amendment, European integration, and data protection, and its rulings are treated as an authoritative model within the broader European tradition of dedicated, centralized constitutional courts, distinct from the diffuse judicial review exercised by ordinary courts in common law systems.
