Stephan Harbarth was born on December 19, 1971 in Heidelberg and is the president of the Federal Constitutional Court of Germany, a former German lawyer and politician of the Christian Democratic Union. From 2009 until 2018 he served as a member of the Bundestag. On November 22, 2018 he was elected to the Federal Constitutional Court by the Bundestag, succeeding Ferdinand Kirchhof and taking a seat in the courts first senate. The day after his election to the court he was elected vice president of the Federal Constitutional Court by the Bundesrat, in which capacity he served as chairman of the first senate.
