It settles legal disputes between states that have consented to its jurisdiction, and gives advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by United Nations organs and specialized agencies. Its jurisdiction over states depends on their consent, so it cannot compel a state that has not accepted its jurisdiction to appear before it.FactsInternational Court of JusticeConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsDisputedFounding YearScholarly debate1945 11945 is the year the United Nations Charter, which established the Court, was signed. The Court itself began hearing cases the following year, 1946, so 1946 is sometimes cited instead as the year it became operational.SeatWell-attestedThe Hague, Netherlands 1Jurisdiction ScopeWell-attestedDisputes between states that have consented to its jurisdiction, and advisory opinions for United Nations organs and specialized agencies. 1Jurisdiction ScopeJurisdiction Scope (category)Well-attestedInternational / Supranational 1International Court of JusticeFilter Results124 entriesRoleAllBarrister and judge (1)Diplomat (1)Diplomat and Judge (1)Diplomat and jurist (6)Diplomat and politician (1)Expert in international law (1)Football official and criminal judge (1)Independence activist, diplomat and jurist (1)International lawyer, diplomat, and judge (1)Judge (9)Judge (Member and President, International Court of Justice) (1)Judge and academic (1)Judge and barrister (1)Judge and diplomat (1)Judge and Jurist (2)Judge and politician (1)Judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) (1)Judge of the International Court of Justice (1)Jurist (10)Jurist and academic (1)Jurist and diplomat (1)Jurist and international judge (1)Jurist and international judge, counsel and arbitrator (1)Jurist and international lawyer (1)Jurist and judge (2)Jurist and lawyer (1)Jurist and legal scholar (1)Jurist and Magistrate (1)Jurist, diplomat and professor of law (1)Jurist, diplomat, and Cabinet Minister (1)Jurist, specialized in private law (1)Law professor (1)Lawyer (2)Lawyer and administrator (1)Lawyer and diplomat (2)Lawyer and judge (1)Lawyer, international legal scholar, former U.S (1)Lawyer, jurist, and writer (1)Lawyer, politician and diplomat (1)Lawyer, writer, politician, and diplomat (1)Legal academic (1)Legal academic and judge (1)Politician and diplomat (2)Politician and judge (1)Politician and jurist (1)Politician and lawyer (1)Politician from Benin (1)Politician, diplomat, and judge (1)politician, diplomat, jurist, and academic (1)Politician, jurist, and diplomat (1)Professor and legal expert (1)Professor of international law (1)Professor of law (1)Soviet jurist and legal expert (1)Nationality or JurisdictionAllAlgerian (1)American (7)Argentine (2)Australian (1)Belgian (1)Beninese (1)Brazil (1)Brazilian (4)British (4)Canadian (1)Chilean (1)Chinese (3)Croatian (1)Dutch (1)Egyptian (3)English (1)Filipino (1)France (1)French (4)German (3)Germany (1)Greek (1)Guyanese (1)Hungarian (1)Indian (5)Iranian (1)Italian (4)Jamaican (1)Japanese (2)Jordanian (1)Kenya (1)Lebanese (2)Malagasy (1)Mexican (3)Moroccan (1)New Zealand (1)Nigerian (3)Norwegian (3)Pakistani (1)Panamanian (1)Peruvian (1)Polish (2)Romania (1)Russian (3)Salvadoran (1)Senegalese (1)Sierra Leonean (1)Slovakia (1)Somalia (1)South Africa (1)South African (1)Soviet (1)Spanish (1)Sri Lankan (1)Syrian (1)Uganda (1)United Kingdom (born in Galicia, Austria-Hungary) (1)United States (2)Uruguayan (1)Venezuelan (1)Legal SystemAllAustralian Law (2)English Law (2)French Legal System (6)German Legal System (4)Indian Legal System (5)Japanese Law (4)Law of Algeria (1)Law of Argentina (2)Law of Belgium (1)Law of Benin (1)Law of Brazil (6)Law of Canada (1)Law of Chile (1)Law of Croatia (1)Law of Egypt (3)Law of Greece (1)Law of Hungary (1)Law of Iran (1)Law of Italy (4)Law of Jamaica (1)Law of Jordan (2)Law of Kenya (1)Law of Lebanon (2)Law of Mexico (5)Law of Morocco (1)Law of Nigeria (3)Law of Norway (3)Law of Pakistan (1)Law of Panama (1)Law of Peru (1)Law of Poland (2)Law of Romania (1)Law of Russia (3)Law of Slovakia (1)Law of Somalia (1)Law of Spain (1)Law of Sri Lanka (1)Law of Sweden (1)Law of Syria (2)Law of the Netherlands (1)Law of the People's Republic of China (4)Law of the Philippines (1)Law of the Soviet Union (5)Law of the United Kingdom (3)Law of the United States (9)Law of Uganda (1)Law of Uruguay (1)Law of Venezuela (2)New Zealand Law (1)Public International Law (7)Scots Law (1)South African Law (2)Field of LawAllAncient and Customary Law (1)Civil / Private Law (3)Commercial and Business Law (1)Common Law (1)Comparative Law (3)Constitutional Law (3)Criminal Law (2)Environmental Law (1)Family Law (1)Human Rights Law (4)International Law (76)Legal Philosophy and Jurisprudence (2)GenderAllFemale (8)Male (99)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 124Abdallah El-KhaniInternational Court of JusticeAbdel Hamid BadawiInternational Court of JusticeAbdul Badawi PashaInternational Court of JusticeAbdul G.
