Arnold McNair

Arnold Duncan McNair, later Baron McNair, was a British legal scholar who lived from 4 March 1885 to 22 May 1975, born in Highbury Fields, London and educated at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge. He was called to the bar at Gray's Inn in 1917, held academic posts at Cambridge, the University of London and the University of Calcutta, served as Vice-Chancellor of Liverpool University from 1937 to 1945, and was appointed Whewell Professor of International Law at Cambridge in 1935. He was elected a judge of the International Court of Justice in 1946 and served as its President from 1952 to 1955, then became the first President of the newly created European Court of Human Rights from 1959 to 1965; he was knighted and made a King's Counsel in 1943 and raised to the peerage as Baron McNair in 1955.
