Shigeru Oda was a Japanese jurist who lived from 22 October 1924 to 4 September 2025, born in Sapporo and educated at the University of Tokyo before earning a doctorate in law from Yale Law School in 1953. He specialized in the law of the sea and was elected a judge of the International Court of Justice in 1976, serving until his retirement in 2003, one of the longest tenures on the Court, and holding the office of Vice-President from 1991 to 1994.
