Yuji Iwasawa was born on June 4, 1954 and is a Japanese jurist who has served as a member of the International Court of Justice since June 22, 2018, when he was elected following the resignation of Judge Hisashi Owada, and was re-elected on November 12, 2020. Before his election as a judge he was a professor of international law at the University of Tokyo, and he formerly chaired the United Nations Human Rights Committee. Following the resignation of former president Nawaf Salam on January 14, 2025, Iwasawa was elected President of the International Court of Justice on March 3, 2025, and is expected to fulfill the remainder of Salams term until February 5, 2027.
