Roberto Ago was an Italian jurist who lived from 26 May 1907 to 24 February 1995, holding professorships in international law at Catania, Genoa and Rome across a long academic career addressing both private and public international law. He served on the United Nations International Law Commission from 1956 to 1979, chairing it in 1964 and 1965 and playing an extended and preeminent role in its codification work, including presiding over the Vienna Conference on the Law of Treaties. He was elected a judge of the International Court of Justice in 1979 and served until his death in 1995, and he later served as president of the Institut de Droit International from 1992 to 1993.
