Jose Francisco Rezek is a Brazilian jurist born on 18 January 1944 in Cristina, Minas Gerais, whose surname reflects his family's Lebanese origin. He taught international law at the University of Brasilia from 1971 to 1997 and at the Rio Branco Institute from 1976 to 1997, served as Brazil's Deputy Attorney-General from 1979 to 1983, sat as a justice on Brazil's Supreme Federal Court across two periods, and briefly served as Brazil's Foreign Minister from 1990 to 1992. He was elected a judge of the International Court of Justice in 1997 and served until 2006, and he has also been a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration since 1987.
