Gilbert Guillaume is a French jurist born on 4 December 1930 who served as Director of Legal Affairs at France's Ministry of Foreign Affairs beginning in 1979 and was appointed to the Permanent Court of Arbitration in 1980. He was elected a judge of the International Court of Justice in 1987 and served until 2005, holding the Court's presidency from 2000 to 2003 as its nineteenth President, and he was later elected to and presided over the Academie des Sciences Morales et Politiques.
