Richard Reeve Baxter

Richard Reeve Baxter, who lived from 14 February 1921 to 25 September 1980, was an American jurist described as the preeminent figure on the law of war from 1950 until his death. A graduate of Brown University and Harvard Law School, he served as a professor of law at Harvard from 1954 to 1979, authored the 1956 revision of the United States Army Manual on the Law of Land Warfare, and represented the United States at the Geneva conferences that produced the Protocols to the Geneva Conventions. He was elected a judge of the International Court of Justice in 1979 and died of cancer roughly one year into his term.
