The International Court of Justice is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations, established by the United Nations Charter (1945) and seated at the Peace Palace in The Hague, Netherlands. It settles legal disputes between states that have consented to its jurisdiction, and gives advisory opinions on legal questions referred to it by United Nations organs and specialized agencies. Its jurisdiction over states depends on their consent, so it cannot compel a state that has not accepted its jurisdiction to appear before it.
