The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia was a United Nations court established to prosecute the war crimes committed during the Yugoslav Wars, created by UN Security Council Resolution 827 on 25 May 1993 and seated in The Hague. It had jurisdiction over grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions, violations of the laws of war, genocide, and crimes against humanity, with a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, and over its existence it indicted 161 individuals. Its final conviction came on 22 November 2017, when Ratko Mladic was found guilty, and the tribunal formally closed on 31 December 2017, with its remaining functions passing to the International Residual Mechanism for Criminal Tribunals.
