Swedish law is a civil law system that depends heavily on statutory law. Like the rest of Europe, Sweden's civil law tradition traces back to Roman law as codified in the Corpus Juris Civilis, developed through German law rather than the Napoleonic Code, though over time Sweden and the other Nordic countries have moved well away from their Roman and German models. Sweden, together with Finland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, the self governing Aland Islands and Iceland, is often described as sharing a distinct Nordic legal tradition that is neither a pure civil law system nor part of the British derived common law family.
