The Supreme Court of Sweden, known in Swedish as the Hogsta domstolen, is the supreme court and the third and final instance in all civil and criminal cases in the Kingdom of Sweden. A case can only reach the Supreme Court after leave to appeal is granted, which with few exceptions is limited to cases of interest as legal precedent. The Court consists of sixteen justices appointed by the government, though the process is guided by the independent Judges Proposals Board, which vets candidates on legal expertise and experience before submitting recommendations. The Court is independent of the Riksdag, and the Government cannot interfere in its decisions; since 2018 justice Anders Eka has served as its chairman.
