The son of Knud Valdemarsen, Duke of Reval, Blekinge and Lolland, and a grandson of the Danish king Valdemar II, he served as justiciar, lagman, of Ostergotland and became a wealthy feudal lord based at Viby, near a manor in Ostra Ryd parish close to Soderkoping. He is recorded acting as knight and councilor from around 1290.
