Law of Ghana

The judiciary of Ghana comprises the Superior Courts of Judicature, established under the 1992 Constitution, and Inferior Courts established by Parliament, with a court hierarchy that derives largely from British juridical forms. The Superior Courts consist of the Supreme Court, Court of Appeal, High Court, and Regional Tribunals, and the enduring colonial legal legacy is visible even in courtroom dress, where judges wear British style wigs of horsehair and scarlet robes. The 1992 Constitution is the primary legal framework for the judiciary and is itself the only source able to define how the judiciary functions, protecting judicial independence from the executive and legislature.
