The Netherlands runs on civil law. Case law plays only a small formal role, though in practice much of Dutch law cannot be understood without it. The system traces to the French Civil Code, with added influence from Roman-Dutch law and older customary law, and the country's current Civil Code was in turn heavily shaped by the German Burgerliches Gesetzbuch.
