The legal system of Uruguay belongs to the Continental Law tradition. Public law rests on the 1967 Constitution as amended in 1989, 1994, 1996, and 2004, under a democratic republic with separated executive, legislative, and judicial powers. Private relationships are governed by the Civil Code of Uruguay, published in 1868 through the work of Tristan Narvaja and drawing on Roman law, Spanish legislation, and canon law, while private international law today combines Hague Conference and Mercosur treaties with the General Law on Private International Law of Uruguay.
