Supreme Court of Israel

The Supreme Court of Israel is the country's highest court, holding both ultimate appellate jurisdiction over all other courts and, sitting as the High Court of Justice, original jurisdiction to review the legality of acts by government bodies, local authorities and other public actors, including direct constitutional challenges to laws enacted by the Knesset. Founded with the state in 1948 and seated in Jerusalem, it expanded its role as a guardian of civil liberties from the 1980s onward, intervening on freedom of speech and assembly, military censorship, and equality between population groups.
