Esther Hayut served as President of the Supreme Court of Israel from 2017 to 2023, having sat as a justice on the court since 2004 after earlier service including as a judge of the Tel Aviv Magistrates Court from 1990. Described as a progressive and liberal justice, she was unanimously elected Chief Justice under Israel's seniority-based selection system, and in January 2024 she took part in the Supreme Court decision striking down judicial reform legislation that would have curtailed the court's power of review. She retired in October 2023 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of seventy.
