Aharon Barak, born in 1936, is an Israeli jurist who served as President of the Supreme Court of Israel from 1995 to 2006, having joined the Court in 1978 after serving as Attorney General of Israel. A Holocaust survivor born in Kaunas, Lithuania, he became one of the most influential judges in the world, developing the doctrine of purposive interpretation and expanding judicial review of legislation under Israel's Basic Laws during the country's so-called constitutional revolution. His writings on judicial discretion and proportionality have been widely cited by constitutional courts across the globe.
