African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights

The African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights is an international court established by the member states of the African Union to enforce the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights, created through a protocol adopted by the Organization of African Unity in Burkina Faso in 1998 that entered into force on 25 January 2004. Headquartered in Arusha, Tanzania, the court complements the African Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights and hears cases concerning the interpretation and application of the Banjul Charter, its protocol, and other applicable human rights instruments. It is staffed by eleven judges nominated by member states and elected by the Assembly of Heads of State and Government to six-year terms with limited re-election, issued its first judgment in 2009, and by September 2021 had delivered 259 decisions across 131 judgments and 128 orders.
