Bolivian law rests on a civil law tradition shaped heavily by Spanish colonial rule and later by the Napoleonic Code. Bolivia has had seventeen constitutions, and its legal sources have historically drawn on acts of the Peru-Bolivian Confederation, legislative codes such as the Codigo Santa Cruz, Spanish law, Roman civil law, and ancient Peruvian customary practice. Contemporary Bolivian law includes a 1977 commercial code and newer legislation such as the 2010 Law of the Rights of Mother Earth.
