The Supreme Court of Singapore comprises the Court of Appeal and the High Court and hears both civil and criminal matters, with the Court of Appeal exercising appellate jurisdiction over the High Court and the High Court sitting as a first-instance court for serious criminal offences and civil disputes above a set monetary threshold. It was formally established on 9 January 1970 when the Supreme Court of Judicature Act took effect, and it is seated at 1 Supreme Court Lane in a building designed by Norman Foster's firm that opened in 2005.
