The judiciary of Uganda operates as an independent branch of government under the Constitution of Uganda, made up of magistrate courts, high courts, a court of appeal that sits as the Constitutional Court of Uganda when hearing constitutional issues, and the Supreme Court. High Court judges are appointed by the president, while Court of Appeal judges are appointed by the president and approved by the legislature; the Parliament of Uganda, established as a unicameral legislature in 1962, is the national legislature.
