Luxembourg law is a civil law system that developed from customary law practiced between the tenth and fifteenth centuries. Its constitutional framework has been established and revised repeatedly, with constitutions in 1841, 1848, 1856 and 1868 and further revisions in 1919, 1948 and 1987. The Chamber of Deputies serves as the legislature, and a Constitutional Court sits within the judiciary; legal practitioners, called avocats, operate under professional secrecy obligations. The system is organized around codified law, including grand ducal regulations and foundational codes such as the Penal Code of 1879, the Commercial Code, the Labour Code and the Code of Criminal Procedure.
