Bulgarian law belongs to the civil law family, drawing on legal models adapted from French and German traditions, and retains increasingly fewer elements of Soviet era law as it has moved toward Western European civil law models. Its criminal procedure follows an inquisitorial rather than adversarial approach, and the system generally favors formality and rationality in its legal reasoning. The Constitution of Bulgaria is the country foundational legal document.
