The Supreme Court of Cassation is the final court of appeal in Bulgaria, established in 1878 and formally opened in 1880 under the Law on the Structure of Courts, with Dimitar Grekov as its first chairman. Under Article 124 of Bulgaria 1991 Constitution it exercises supreme judicial power over the application of the law in all Bulgarian courts, may overturn a lower court final decision, takes part in appointing judges to the Constitutional Court, and refers questions of a law constitutionality to that court. Its chairman serves a single seven year term, appointed by the President of the Republic on the recommendation of the Supreme Judicial Council.
