The legal system of Azerbaijan is based on civil law. Azerbaijan was a republic of the Soviet Union until 1991, and its legal history was heavily influenced by Soviet socialist law; after independence, declared on 18 October 1991, Azerbaijan adopted a Constitution in 1995 that now serves as the foundation of the legislative system of the modern country.
