The Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan is the supreme body of constitutional justice in the Republic of Azerbaijan, deciding the matters that the Constitution places within its jurisdiction. It was set up on 14 July 1998 and is an independent state body that does not depend in its organization, finances or activity on the legislature, the executive or any other court. Its basic objectives are to secure the supremacy of the Constitution and to protect the fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals. The court has nine judges, appointed by the Milli Majlis on the recommendation of the President for a single fifteen year term, and its decisions are final and cannot be cancelled, changed or officially interpreted by any other body or official. It reviews whether laws and official acts conform to the Constitution, interprets the Constitution and laws, and hears individual complaints once other remedies are exhausted.
