Caribbean Court of Justice

International and Supranational Courts and Tribunals

The Caribbean Court of Justice is the judicial institution of the Caribbean Community, known as CARICOM. It was established in 2005 and is based in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. The court has two jurisdictions. In its original jurisdiction it interprets and applies the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas, which established the Caribbean Community, and acts as an international court with compulsory and exclusive jurisdiction over the interpretation of that treaty. In its appellate jurisdiction it is the court of last resort in civil and criminal matters for those member states that have ceased to allow appeals to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council; as of April 2023 these were Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Guyana and Saint Lucia.
