Civil Law Family

Slovak law is a civil law system whose constitutional framework dates to 1992, the year Slovakia became independent. The National Council is the legislature responsible for enacting Acts, the country primary legislative instrument, and the judiciary includes the Supreme Court of Slovakia and the Constitutional Court of Slovakia. The Slovak Civil Code descends from the Czechoslovak Civil Code of 1964, reflecting the country history as part of a shared federal state, while the Criminal Code was modernized in 2005, replacing a version dating to 1961.
