The Constitutional Court of the Slovak Republic was established under the Constitution of the Slovak Republic, which was adopted while the Czech and Slovak federation still existed but was designed from the start as the constitution of an independent state. The court commenced its operations on 17 March 1993 under its first president, Milan Čič. It followed the Constitutional Court of the Czech and Slovak Federal Republic, which had twelve judges, six from each federal republic, and ceased to exist with the dissolution of the common state on 31 December 1992. Its decisions were meant to follow the concept of the substantive rule of law that the federal court had adopted. The court has its seat in Košice, at Hlavná 110, and its work is supported by a separate Chancellery.
