Ruth Bader Ginsburg lived from 1933 to 2020 and served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1993 until her death, the second woman to sit on that Court. Before her judicial appointments she co-founded the Women's Rights Project at the American Civil Liberties Union and argued a series of landmark sex-discrimination cases before the Supreme Court in the 1970s, methodically establishing that the Equal Protection Clause applies to gender-based classifications. As a judge on the D.C. Circuit and then the Supreme Court she became a leading voice on gender equality, civil procedure and separation-of-powers doctrine, and her dissenting opinions in her later years drew wide public attention.
