The General Data Protection Law, known by its Portuguese initials LGPD (Lei Geral de Protecao de Dados Pessoais), formally Law No. 13.709 of August 14, 2018, is Brazil's statutory law on data protection and privacy. It unifies roughly forty separate Brazilian laws that had previously regulated the processing of personal data, and it applies globally whenever the personal data concerned belongs to an individual located in Brazil, is collected or processed in Brazil, or is used to offer goods or services to individuals in Brazil. The law became law September 18, 2020 with its enforceability backdated to August 16, 2020, though sanctions under it were not applied until August 1, 2021. Brazil's national data protection authority, the Autoridade Nacional de Protecao de Dados (ANPD), is responsible for enforcement.
