The ePrivacy Directive is a European Union directive, adopted in 2002 and amended in 2009, that regulates privacy in electronic communications, including the confidentiality of communications, the use of cookies and similar tracking technologies, and rules against unsolicited marketing communications. It complements the General Data Protection Regulation by addressing privacy interests specific to electronic communications networks and services. The Directive's cookie consent requirements, often called the cookie law, have shaped how websites across the European Union request user consent before placing tracking technologies on a visitor's device.
