The Data Privacy Act of 2012, Republic Act No. 10173, is Philippine legislation protecting the privacy of individuals' personal information while ensuring the free flow of information for innovation, growth and national development. It created the National Privacy Commission, an independent government body administratively attached to the Department of Information and Communications Technology for policy coordination while remaining functionally independent, to administer and implement the Act's provisions, monitor the country's compliance with international data protection standards, receive complaints, investigate violations, and compel compliance with its orders; the Commission also represents the Philippine government on international data protection matters and conducts public education on data protection obligations. The National Privacy Commission was formally established March 7, 2016.
