Tobias Michael Carel Asser lived from 1838 to 1913 and was a Dutch lawyer and legal scholar. In 1911 he won the Nobel Peace Prize, shared with Alfred Fried, for his role in establishing the Permanent Court of Arbitration at the First Hague Peace Conference in 1899 and for his achievements in establishing the Hague Conference on Private International Law. He taught at the University of Amsterdam and worked across both public international law and private international law.
