Latvian law is largely a civil law system, as opposed to a common law one, built on epitomes of the German and French legal systems and carrying some remaining traces of Soviet era socialist practice. It is grounded in the Constitution of the Republic of Latvia and safeguarded by the Constitutional Court, and it has treated European Union law as a core component since the accession of Latvia to the European Union on May 1, 2004, following the earlier period of Soviet law during the occupation of the Baltic states.
