Uruguay's constitution was first adopted on 18 July 1830 following the 1828 Treaty of Montevideo, which ended the Cisplatine War and established Uruguay as a sovereign state after years within the United Provinces of the Rio de la Plata. It created a unitary republic with power separated among a president, a bicameral General Assembly of a Senate and a Chamber of Representatives, and a Supreme Court of Justice appointed by the Assembly. The 1830 text remained in force for 87 years and, though reformed in 1918, 1934, 1942 and 1952 and superseded by the current 1967 constitution last amended in 2004, still carries several articles unchanged from its original version.
