The Constitution of Bolivia, adopted on 7 February 2009 after approval in a January 2009 referendum with about 61 percent support, was promulgated by President Evo Morales and replaced the 1967 constitution as the country's seventeenth since independence. It declares Bolivia a Unitary Social State of Plurinational, Community-Based Law with four constitutionally recognized branches of government, legislative, executive, judicial and electoral, and it recognizes 36 indigenous languages as official alongside Spanish. The document caps private land holdings at 5,000 hectares and names Sucre the constitutional capital, while the executive and legislature continue to sit in La Paz.
