Mbuyiseli Madlanga

Mbuyiseli Madlanga (born 27 March 1962, in Mount Frere, Cape Province) is a South African judge who served as a Justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa from 2013 to 2025, after serving as a judge of the Transkei Division of the High Court from 1996 to 2001 and practicing as an advocate in the Eastern Cape. He acted as Deputy Chief Justice of South Africa from September 2024 to July 2025 and was appointed Chancellor of Rhodes University in October 2025. He authored S v Steyn, striking down provisions of the Criminal Procedure Act that denied automatic appeal rights, delivered the main judgment in the consumer-friendly banking case Paulsen v Slip Knot, and co-authored the majority judgment in My Vote Counts v Speaker in 2015. He served as evidence leader at major commissions investigating the fitness of a police commissioner and the Marikana miners strike, and currently chairs the Madlanga Commission investigating allegations of criminality and corruption within South Africa criminal justice system.
