Zaki Azmi served as the sixth Chief Justice of Malaysia from October 2008 to September 2011, the son of a former Lord President of the Federal Court, Azmi Mohamed. A barrister trained at Lincoln's Inn who had worked as a legal adviser to the political party UMNO, he received a direct appointment to the Federal Court in September 2007 described as unprecedented in Malaysian judicial history, becoming Chief Justice after little more than a year on the superior courts, an ascent that drew criticism at the time. After retiring from Malaysia's bench in 2011 he was appointed Chief Justice of the Dubai International Financial Centre Courts in 2018.
