Syed Sajjad Ali Shah (17 February 1933 to 7 March 2017) was the thirteenth Chief Justice of Pakistan, leading the Supreme Court from 4 June 1994 to 2 December 1997 after being appointed by Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto ahead of two more senior judges. As Chief Justice he upheld President Farooq Leghari's 1996 dismissal of the Bhutto government, and his later confrontation with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif culminated in 1997 when Sharif supporters stormed the Supreme Court building during proceedings against the prime minister, forcing Shah to adjourn and leave for his own safety. He had earlier served as Chief Justice of the Sindh High Court from 1989 to 1990, and died in Karachi at 84 following a chest infection.
