Stephen Johnson Field lived from November 4, 1816 to April 9, 1899 and was an American jurist who served as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1863 to 1897, and before that as the fifth chief justice of California. He had the third longest tenure of any Supreme Court justice and is the only justice known to have served contemporaneously with a relative on the Court, his nephew David J. Brewer.
