Thomas Stanley Matthews, known in adulthood as Stanley Matthews, was born on July 21, 1824, and died on March 22, 1889, and served as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court from May 1881 until his death. An Ohio attorney, soldier and United States senator before his appointment, he was a Republican and a progressive justice on the Court, best remembered as the author of two landmark rulings, Yick Wo v. Hopkins, which held that a law administered in a discriminatory manner violates the Equal Protection Clause even if neutral on its face, and Ex parte Crow Dog, which addressed the extent of federal jurisdiction over crimes committed by Native Americans on tribal land.
