Sergio Garcia Ramirez was a Mexican jurist who lived from 1938 to 2024, born in Guadalajara and educated at Mexico's National Autonomous University, where he received the university's first doctorate in law awarded magna cum laude. He served in the Mexican cabinet as Secretary of Labor under President Jose Lopez Portillo from 1981 to 1982 and as Attorney General under President Miguel de la Madrid from 1982 to 1988, and ran unsuccessfully for his party's presidential nomination in 1988. Garcia Ramirez served as a judge of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights from 1997 to 2009, including as the court's president from 2004 to 2007, succeeding Antonio Augusto Cancado Trindade, and he remained an active professor and researcher at his alma mater law school throughout his career.
