Samuel Nelson lived from November 10, 1792 to December 13, 1873 and was an American attorney who was appointed a judge of the New York state courts before serving as a justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1845 to 1872. He concurred in the 1857 Dred Scott decision, though for reasons different from those of Chief Justice Roger Taney.
