Samuel Freeman Miller lived from April 5, 1816 to October 13, 1890 and was an American lawyer and physician who served as an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1862 until his death in 1890, authoring landmark opinions in United States v. Kagama and the Slaughterhouse Cases.
