Neil McGill Gorsuch was born on August 29, 1967, in Denver, Colorado, and has served as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States since 2017, nominated by President Donald Trump to fill the seat left vacant by Antonin Scalias death. He earned a doctorate in jurisprudence from the University of Oxford, where his thesis on the morality of assisted suicide was supervised by the legal philosopher John Finnis, and he clerked for Justice Byron White and Justice Anthony Kennedy before serving on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit from 2006. A proponent of textualism and originalism who, with Justice Clarence Thomas, has advocated natural law jurisprudence, he authored the Courts majority opinion in Bostock v. Clayton County, extending federal employment discrimination protections to gay and transgender workers, as well as in McGirt v. Oklahoma on tribal jurisdiction and Ramos v. Louisiana on unanimous jury verdicts.
